2024 Parramatta Light Rail Tree Planting

In 2024, the City of Parramatta and Transport for NSW will partner again in a major tree planting program. Starting in March, almost 500 trees will be planted in Granville, Harris Park, Northmead, North Parramatta, Parramatta, Rosehill, and Westmead.

2023 Parramatta Light Rail Telopea Planting 

City of Parramatta will begin planting native tubestock in Telopea with more than 370 endemic trees being planted in the Vineyard Creek bushland corridor at Rockfarm Avenue and Robert Street. For more information see our Parramatta Light Rail Telopea Planting page. 

2023 Parramatta Light Rail Tree Planting

In March 2019, City of Parramatta, in partnership with Transport for NSW, completed a pilot tree planting program which saw 120 new street trees added to our urban tree canopy in Westmead and North Parramatta.

In July and October 2022, the joint program saw 335 trees planted in selected parks and reserves across the Parramatta area.

In March 2023, a new planting program will begin with more than 1,000 trees planned for the Carlingford, Dundas, Oatlands, Rydalmere and Telopea area. 

Our arborists have selected a range of trees (27 tree types, native and exotic, deciduous and evergreen) suitable for various locations. Among the proposed trees are species that are slim and tall, ideal for narrow streets, and those that are shorter and more compact, perfect for under powerlines. The East Epping Heritage Conservation Area Street Tree Planting Program is being funded through community action.

In 2021, City of Parramatta was provided with a $450,000 grant to deliver statement trees within the CBD.  Following a review of potential locations and the selection of tree types, in mid-December 2022 semi-mature trees, well over 3m, were planted in Marsden and O’Connell streets as part of planned street upgrades within the CBD.

Constraints such as overhead power-lines, underground services, access requirements and existing street trees were considered. 

This project is part of the Greening Our City grant program that is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with Local Government NSW.

In late 2020, City of Parramatta was awarded $500,000 by the NSW Government with Council matching that funding to plant more than 2,600 trees.

The project team identified areas most vulnerable to the impacts of urban heat – and those most likely to benefit from additional tree canopy – and selected a variety of advanced trees appropriate to their planned location. Constraints such as overhead power-lines, access requirements and existing street trees were also considered.

In addition to cooling our city, new trees will support local habitat and enliven our streets making them more attractive now and for generations to come.

This project is part of the Greening Our City grant program that is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with Local Government NSW. The grant program looked to increase tree canopy and green cover across the Greater Sydney Region by planting one million trees by the end of 2022.

The Great West Walk is a 65km walking route stretching from Parramatta to the foot of the Blue Mountains. 

In 2021, the City of Parramatta planted more than 7,600 trees alongside Toongabbie Creek as part of Greening the Great West Walk, an initiative proudly funded by the NSW Government.

In July 2022, City of Parramatta was successful in securing more than $126k from the Department of Planning and Environment for Stage 2 of Greening the Great West Walk.

Over the next 12 months, work will take place to improve the amenity and walking facilities along the walk. In addition to weed clearing and other work, more than 2,800 trees will be planted along the Toongabbie Creek corridor.

As part of commemorative events programs honouring Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and her 70 years of service, City of Parramatta was awarded a Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water grant, with $10,000 provided by the Commonwealth for tree planting in Upjohn Park, Rydalmere.

Council contributed a further $16,000+ to the program, and planted large Eucalypts to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee.

Residents can request for a tree to be planted on the nature strip in front of their property.

Requests will be reviewed by a member of our Open Spaces team who will consider a range of factors including the size of the nature strip, power lines and underground services, driveway, parking and footpath locations, and other trees within the streetscape. Residents can only request a street tree adjacent to their own property.

How to submit a request
 

Go to the Online Services Portal, select submit a request, select Trees on Council land button and fill in the request with your details. The Open Spaces team will consider the proposed site and advise if a tree can be planted.
