New waste collection service - FOGO

Waste Management and FOGO Guide for Renters

As a renter, understanding your waste and bin options can help you make informed choices and navigate any required interactions with property managers or landlords. This guide provides key information to help you with bin selection, request processes, and how the City of Parramatta Council can assist you.

Understanding Your Bin Options

Whether you’re in a single-unit dwelling or a multi-unit complex, knowing your waste service options is important. This includes understanding who can request changes to your bins, the costs associated with different bin sizes, and the types of bins available in your area:

  • Single-unit dwellings: Houses, duplexes, villas, and townhouses with fewer than 7 units
  • Multi-unit dwellings: Complexes with more than 7 units, such as townhouses and apartments with fewer than 30

Requesting a Different Red Garbage Bin Size

Requests for changes to the red garbage bin size must be made by the property owner or their authorised representatives, which can include real estate agents, strata managers, or the owners’ corporation.
Your landlord will incur the following costs for a new bin:

Bin Size Annual Cost (FY2024/25)

Bin Size Annual Cost Cost Implication
80L red lid garbage bin $457.85 Cost saving of $42.69
140L red lid garbage bin $500.54 No additional fee – cost remaining the same as is currently being paid.
240L red lid garbage bin $754.69 Additional cost of $254.15 on what your landlord is currently paying (based on existing standard 140L red lid bin service).

Renting in a Single-Unit Dwelling

If you rent a single-unit dwelling (e.g., a house or duplex), you can discuss changes to your red garbage bin with your landlord or real estate agent.

Renting in Multi-Unit Dwellings

For renters in larger multi-unit complexes, it’s essential to coordinate with your landlord or real estate agent, who can then liaise with the strata management team. The owner’s corporation typically determines the number and types of bins provided, and costs are applied to individual unit owners accordingly.

To assist you, the council has created a letter template that you can use to request a larger capacity red lid bin from your landlord, strata manager or owner’s corporation.
