The Minister for Transport and Infrastructure has announced the awarding of the two major contracts to construct and operate Stage 1 of the Parramatta Light Rail.
16 August 2018
The NSW Government has given Parramatta's premier dining strip 'Eat Street' a guarantee that major construction for the Parramatta Light Rail will not commence until at least 2020.
Transport for NSW advises smaller site investigations works will take place on Eat Street in 2019 with minimal disruption and that businesses and residents will be kept informed well ahead of these works commencing.
Parramatta Light Rail will begin associated road, traffic and remediation works later this year.

The NSW Government announced The Diona Ward Joint Venture (Diona Pty Ltd and Ward Civil & Environmental Engineering Pty Ltd) has been appointed to deliver the Parramatta Light Rail ‘Enabling Works’.
The contract encompasses the relocation of underground utilities, the modification or installation of traffic lights, road widening, the redirection of traffic flows and changes to parking.
As part of road and traffic changes ahead of Parramatta Light Rail construction, George Street in the Parramatta CBD will become two-way and O’Connell Street will be widened to four lanes. Enabling Works are expected to begin in late 2018.

The NSW Government announced planning approval for Stage 1 of the Critical State Significant Infrastructure project.
Planning approval follows Council and community input on the Environmental Impact Statement for Stage 1 of the Parramatta Light Rail project in 2017.
May 2018
Contract to lead work on light rail depot awarded. The NSW Government announced that infrastructure service provider Ventia will remediate the light rail Stabling and Maintenance site at 6 Grand Avenue, Camellia.
The works will ensure the safe and sustainable management of chemical and asbestos contamination resulting from the land's historical industrial use.
The Parramatta Light Rail Stabling and Maintenance facility will be used to maintain and house the light rail vehicles, as well as a control centre to operate the light rail system.

February 2017
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Andrew Constance confirmed the State Government's $1 billion proposal for a light rail line between Westmead, Parramatta and Carlingford.

City of Parramatta Council adopted its Position Paper on Parramatta Light Rail.
Articulating Council’s aspiration for light rail in the City of Parramatta, the position paper included objectives, guiding principles and priorities.
It also provided a policy context for more detailed design work to be undertaken in preparing for Parramatta Light Rail and a strategic direction for Council in consulting with the NSW Government and stakeholders in planning and delivering the project.

The NSW State Government announced it would provide $10 million for a detailed feasibility study for the Western Sydney Light Rail Network.
2013
A feasibility study into light rail for Western Sydney was first undertaken in 2013. Council invested $1 million into the project.
