 HOSSEI adopts themes of secrecy, the unconscious, theatricality and mysticism to create surreal scenarios. 

About HOSSEI (he/him)

HOSSEI is a multidisciplinary Australian artist with Persian, Turkish and Russian ancestry, exhibiting work across Western Sydney and beyond, he has worked with institutions including Parramatta Artist Studios’, Artspace, SCA and Dark Mofo. HOSSEI has maintained a strong passion with his performance work, a deep connection to the human voice and more specifically his ‘choir performances’. 

HOSSEI ‘s practice deals with his complex heritage, fantasies and feelings, togetherness, healing, he adopts themes of secrecy, the unconscious, theatricality and mysticism to create surreal scenarios through real and imagined characters. Recently his work looks at his mother as a subject, entering her psyche and telling her life experiences and stories.

Biography

HOSSEI holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) of Fine Arts at Sydney College of the Arts. Significantly, HOSSEI was selected for Primavera 2014: Young Australian Artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. HOSSEI has had residencies in Sydney with Parramatta Artist Studios in 2014-2015, Artspace in 2016 and the PAS Open Digital Residency 2021-2022. Recently HOSSEI has been commissioned to make new work in 2023 for West Space gallery at Collingwood Yards in Melbourne. HOSSEI is the recipient of 2022 UTS Artist in Residence where he worked with the faculty of Design, Architecture and Building for 12 months. The residency culminated in public presentation of new work at UTS in 2023. In 2024 HOSSEI presented his installation and performance work ESSSENSSSE at Verge Gallery and he is currently working with Blacktown Arts Centre for his recent commission U.F.O.
