Local seniors have the chance to get out and active with registrations for City of Parramatta’s Term 1 Over 55s leisure and learning activities now open.

Classes cover a variety of physical, creative and mindfulness activities. The program includes low-impact movement classes focusing on balance and coordination for different styles such as Tai Chi, Zumba and line dancing. Other activities such as yoga, pilates and meditation aim to improve flexibility, strength and mindfulness.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber said past activities have had a positive impact on seniors both physically and mentally.

“Many seniors join classes to keep fit or learn a new skill and often make new friends along the way,” Cr Esber said.

“There is something for everyone from dancing to gentle exercises and painting with easy-to-follow steps and friendly instructors to guide you during each class.”

Tennis fans can learn the fundamentals of the sport with an experienced tennis coach in a casual setting, while those looking to reduce stress and strengthen their minds can register for a range of activities including yoga, pilates, tai chi, meditation and singing.

The program supports people who could be at risk of isolation to make new connections, while building confidence in various skills. Colleen has been a part of the free knitting group for over 20 years, while her husband David attends the advanced art class and they both love enjoy how social their classes are.

“Our knitting group meets fortnightly on a Tuesday and have previously knitted garments for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. I’ve developed a great friendship outside of the program with Joan who is an original member and we check in on each other regularly,” Colleen said.

Activities are located at various locations within the Parramatta area and online. Classes run from 5 February to 12 April 2024. Bookings are essential.
