North Parramatta park upgrades to create City’s heart of play

An $8.7 million project set to transform four much-loved parks in North Parramatta and deliver a connected network of multi-sport and recreational open spaces is now on public exhibition.

The Strengthening the Heart of Play project will see Barton Park, PH Jeffrey Reserve, Sherwin Park and Old Saleyards Reserve revitalised with new park furniture, shared walking and cycling paths, mature canopy trees planted, street lighting and raised pedestrian crossings.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Martin Zaiter said it was part of Council’s long-term vision to create better connected green spaces in the community that future generations can enjoy.

“This project is helping bring our Heart of Play Masterplan to life where residents living in North Parramatta will have multiple connected green open spaces in their backyard,” Cr Zaiter said.

“As a father I know how important it is to make sure our kids have a safe space to kick a ball and ride their bike or a place to enjoy a barbecue and picnic outdoors that is close to home.

“More families are choosing our City as their home so we need to make sure we have the right infrastructure in place as our population grows.”

Proposed features also include a new sportsground pavilion to service Barton Park and PH Jeffrey Reserve with upgraded fitness equipment at Barton Park and improved parking capacity at PH Jeffrey Reserve.

New BBQ and shelter areas, a new accessible amenities building, an extension of the existing community garden and a restoration of the basketball court at Sherwin Park are included, while Old Saleyards Reserve will see a new fitness station installed and amenities refurbished.

This project is funded by the NSW Government through the Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program.

Submissions close at 5pm on Tuesday 6 May 2025. Visit Council’s Participate Parramatta page to have your say.
