First Nations talent takes to the stage at Burramatta NAIDOC event

From electro-folk and hip-hop to a family four-piece-band, First Nations artists will take the stage for a day of music, entertainment and culture at this year’s Burramatta NAIDOC event.

Dance, didgeridoo and Dharug language workshops are just some of the activities on offer at the free, family-friendly fun day on Sunday 10 July from 10.30am to 5pm in Parramatta Park.

Burramatta NAIDOC is part of the City of Parramatta’s annual First Nations festival, Warami, which runs over six weeks and includes National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week events.

“Join us in our celebration of First Nation’s culture through art, dance, song, food and crafts,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Donna Davis said.

“This year’s NAIDOC Week theme, ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’, reflects the strength and proud history of our First Nations people. Getting involved in the activities is the best way to bring everyone together, so we can share and enjoy our rich First Nations culture.”
Some of Australia’s top First Nations music and dance acts will perform on the day, including R&B singer and ARIA Award winner Budjerah, who recently released a collaboration with Ed Sheeran; Indigenous electro-pop sisters The Merindas; indie-folk singer-songwriter Tilly Tjala Thomas; and local hip-hop star Kobie Dee.

This year’s event also showcases Castlereagh Connection, a four-piece family band from Gomeroi country, Coonamble in NSW. The group recently appeared on the popular TV series The Voice: Generations and plays classic hits in their traditional language, Gamilaraay, alongside well-known country, pop and rock songs.

Attendees can also enjoy First Nations craft workshops, including ochre painting, bracelet weaving, and bush tucker walks and talks across the day. Koori Kids will keep children entertained with traditional indigenous games and activities.

NAIDOC Week, which runs from 3 to 10 July, is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest continuous living cultures on earth.
