Belmore Park Stage 1 marks the beginning towards transforming this much-loved community space into a unique high quality recreation destination in North Parramatta. The project aims to enhance a diverse range of recreational opportunities to service the growing local population.
Preparation work will commence from Friday 31 January to Monday 10 February 2025, during which public access to certain areas of the park will be restricted:
- Field access will be unavailable from Monday 3 February to Friday 7 February 2025.
- Playground access will be unavailable from Monday 3 February to Wednesday 5 February 2025.
City of Parramatta Council is committed to minimising disruptions and ensuring the community is well-informed throughout the process.
Preserving Aboriginal Heritage at Belmore Park
Parramatta stands at the heart of Darug Country and takes its name from the Darug word Burramatta ("eel place"). For thousands of years, the area has been a significant site for Aboriginal communities, valued for its natural resources and cultural importance. Archaeological evidence such as stone artefacts, camping sites, and culturally modified trees highlights the enduring connection of Aboriginal people to this region.
City of Parramatta Council has engaged Artefact Heritage and Environment to perform archaeological and heritage assessments at Belmore Park as part of Stage 1 developments. These assessments aim to:
- Identify and preserve potential Aboriginal objects at the site.
- Shed light on the deep cultural significance of the area.
Community Engagement and Expert Oversight
The Artefact Heritage team, which specialises in archaeological and cultural heritage management, will conduct test excavations at Belmore Park from Friday 31 January to Monday 10 February 2025. Community members are welcome to speak with Artefact’s staff during this period to learn more about the project and its findings.
This work is an important step in honouring the cultural heritage of Aboriginal people while ensuring the future development of Belmore Park is sensitive and respectful to its history.

Parramatta’s first premier cricket facility and turf wicket will become a reality after Council secured a $6.2 million Australian Government grant to deliver stage 1 of the Belmore Park Masterplan.
The grant was approved in 2024 and combined with an additional $3.8 million funding by City of Parramatta, will fund several upgrades at Richie Benaud Oval, including the area’s first and only turf wicket, three fenced synthetic practice wickets, a public amenity building, loop path, fencing, lighting and an electronic scoreboard.
The Belmore Park Masterplan is planned in three stages and will become a unique high-quality recreation destination for Parramatta. Belmore Park Stage 1 has total funding of $10 million.
