Plans to refresh Parramatta’s iconic George Street in the CBD as part of a streetscape master plan to improve the landscape and revitalise the historic neighbourhood are open for community feedback.
The project focuses on the stretch from O’Connell Street on the west, through the future Civic Link at Horwood Place to Harris Street on the east.
Design features include the installation of street furniture, CCTV cameras and fibre, tree planting, new granite pavers and the potential for outdoor dining and the community is invited to have their say before a draft master plan is developed.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said Parramatta is emerging as a global City and this project is about revitalising a key section in the CBD.
“Our CBD precinct will continue to transform as we deliver world-class projects such as Civic Link, the reimagined Riverside Theatres and the Metro West,” Cr Zaiter said.
“This is an opportunity for you to help shape a busy thoroughfare in the heart of our City that has so much history and culture at every corner.
“From the former bank of NSW, Parramatta District Court and the Roxy Theatre to fantastic eateries and restaurants at Eat Street – it’s important to preserve our heritage while enhancing the landscape along this key civic street.”
George Street formed as a major road in 1790 spanning 61 metres wide and was formally known as High Street during the time. The street was narrowed to its current 20 metre width in 1811 as the region expanded.
