Installation of part-time ‘No Parking School Days’ restriction in Ward Street, Epping

RE: Installation of part-time ‘No Parking 8am-9.30am 2:30pm-4pm School Days’ restriction – ‘Drop-off and Pick-up Zone’ Ward Street, Epping

At the request of the school, Council has recently reviewed the set-down and pick-up area in Ward Street.

At present, a set-down and pick-up area is located only on the west side of Ward Street outside Epping West Public School. As a result, southbound motorists are making unsafe and illegal U-turns near the pedestrian crossing and unbroken double barrier centreline to access the set-down and pick-up area.

To discourage the illegal and unsafe U-turns, Council in consultation with Ryde Police Area Command and Epping West Public School is proceeding with the installation of part-time ‘No Parking 8am-9:30am 2:30pm-4pm School Days’ restrictions outside 6-8 Ward Street, Epping

Council appreciates that this is not the preferred outcome of consulted affected residents, however in this instance the safety of the students should take priority.

Accordingly, arrangements will be made for the signs to be installed in approximately 1-3 weeks

No Parking and Drop off zone

How to Use the ‘No Parking 8am-9.30am 2:30pm-4pm School Days’ restriction – ‘Drop-off and Pick-up Zone’

The drop-off and pick-up zones at schools use the ‘No Parking’ road rule and are effective as motorists do not need to leave their vehicles when dropping-off or picking-up passengers.

The Road Rules 2014 (Rule 168 part 1) states:

‘The driver of a vehicle must not stop on a length of road or in an area to which a ‘No Parking’ sign applies, unless the driver:

  • is dropping off, or picking up, passengers or goods, and
  • does not leave the vehicle unattended, and
  • completes the dropping off, or picking up, of the passengers or goods, and drives on, as soon as possible and, in any case, within the required time after stopping.’
In this rule ‘required time’ means 2 minutes except for holders of a mobility parking scheme permit who have 5 minutes.

U-Turns illustrations

U-turns

You must not make a U-turn:

  • at intersections without traffic lights where there’s a ‘No U-turn’ sign
  • at intersections with traffic lights, unless there’s a ‘U-turn permitted’ sign
  • across a single unbroken dividing line or double unbroken dividing line
  • across double dividing lines with an unbroken line closer to you
  • on motorways and freeways.

Remember, road rules are in place to protect all road users including pedestrians, and all motorists are expected to always follow the road rules.
