Parramatta's bike paths are about to undergo one of its biggest expansions with an updated bike plan setting out future paths to transform the entire City’s network.
The Parramatta Bike Plan 2024 has been endorsed by Council following months of consultation across the LGA. Community feedback highlighted the importance of delivering a safe and accessible network of cycle paths across Parramatta.
The plan will help deliver almost 20 kilometres of new bike paths from now until 2027 with a greater focus on safety and education, improved accessibility and connectivity, more lighting, bins, bike parking, shade and bathroom facilities, and better signage.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber said it’s a 5–10-year plan providing the right infrastructure for cyclists.
“Parramatta wants to embrace active transport across our City,” Cr Esber said.
“More and more of us are jumping on our bikes to get around and we want to encourage more people to get out of the car and onto a bike to get to work, school and to go shopping.
“Council has set a target to increase bike transportation to at least 5% of all work trips, and 10% of those ending in Parramatta CBD by 2043 and the Bike Plan helps us achieve this goal.
“Plus, it’s a great opportunity to see all the exciting new infrastructure such as Alfred Street Bridge, which was officially opened in October 2023.”
More than 3000 people viewed the draft Bike Plan with 800 comments provided in the feedback.
The 2024 Plan is a major update to the 2017 version and responds to significant changes with land use, new cycling infrastructure such as the Carlingford to Parramatta Active Transport link, increased population, and changes to NSW Government policies.
