The rising stars of Western Sydney’s music scene will get a chance to go head to head at a ‘Best of the West’ youth battle of the bands event on June 21 as Parramatta celebrates Make Music Day, a world-wide celebration of music.

Students from performing arts and high schools across Western Sydney are encouraged to apply for an opportunity to perform with six finalists to play live at Parramatta Square over four hours.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber said the event offered young musicians and artists a chance to show off their skills to the masses.

“We want to make Parramatta the home of creative festivals and entertainment by 2050,” Cr Esber said.

“We want our young people to be centre stage as part of Parramatta’s transformation, so I encourage all young musicians and bands from Western Sydney to have a go.

“Battle of the West is more than a youth community event, it empowers young people to make their mark on stage and share their musical talent.”

The winner of the event will win a recording session with Western Sydney producer Chelsea Warner, as well as have their track played on Sydney’s FBI Radio (94.5FM) and a chance to perform their own set during the City’s four-day Parramatta Lanes festival.

Local artist Pierre Smid said events like Make Music Day at Parramatta Square provide artists a chance to show off their talents and do what they love.

“These small gatherings make the community feel cozy and welcoming, bringing together people who love art,” Ms Smid said.

“Being involved in these events isn't just unique - it's a touching experience that means a lot to me.”
