The City of Parramatta is embarking on a journey of growth and renewal, with the goal of revitalising the Parramatta River, reimagining the City's waterfront, and positioning itself as the Central River City.
Building upon the achievements of the Escarpment Boardwalk, Charles Street Square, and the Alfred Street Bridge, the next stage in revitalizing the Parramatta foreshore is the Western River Precinct Connections project.
Set to be completed by 2027, this $28+ million project is centred around the creation of new pedestrian and cycling paths, providing a continuous, accessible foreshore route and improving connections between the foreshore and adjacent streets.
Active transport links and enjoyment of the Parramatta River
Focused on the river segment between Marsden Street and O'Connell Street, the Western River Precinct Connections will provide the community with more opportunities to engage with, appreciate, and enjoy the Parramatta River.
The project introduces a river crossing and additional access points for exploring the waterway, which holds great historical, cultural, and lifestyle significance for Parramatta.
A dedicated bridge for pedestrians and cyclists will connect the northern and southern riverbanks near Marsden Street. The bridge will also provide a key north-south active transport connection across our city centre.
A new boardwalk along the southern foreshore, with connections under existing bridges, will establish continuous foreshore access for walking and cycling along the river’s edge, something currently only possible on the northern side.
Along the new riverside route, there will be scenic spots where people can relax and take in the views. The bridge, boardwalk and other upgraded connections will also be designed to improve accessibility.
Supporting the local environment
The project will seek to improve the health of the river by limiting impacts to existing native trees and habitat, retaining trees of significance and removing invasive vegetation. Planting initiatives will contribute to enhanced biodiversity and habitat.
The project recognises the nature of flooding at the Parramatta River and is committed to implement infrastructure that is flood resilient.
Creating more active transport connections
Western River Precinct Connections will address critical missing pedestrian and cycling links in the river foreshore corridor that will better link key destinations such as Parramatta Park, CommBank Stadium, the City Centre, Riverside Theatres and the future Powerhouse Parramatta - Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences.

- Mid-2024 to late-2025 design
investigations and concept design, options testing, public exhibition, design refinement, detailed design and documentation - Late-2025 to early-2026 construction planning
tender, tender award, execution - Early-2026 construction begins
construction anticipated to commence - Late-2027 construction ends
Construction planned to conclude, subject to weather, supply and site conditions.
The $28.3 million Western Parramatta River and CBD Precinct Connections project is funded by the NSW Government through its Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program. The program is providing $2 billion to fund transformational infrastructure projects across Western Sydney.
