Parramatta River Transformation

Alfred Street Bridge

A spectacular new addition to the City skyline, this elegant pedestrian and cyclist bridge was officially opened by Lord Mayor Pierre Esber and NSW Minister for Transport Jo Haylen on 31 October 2023.

Co-funded by City of Parramatta and the NSW Government, the $19m Alfred Street Bridge provides the City's growing population with a convenient, safe and scenic connection over the Parramatta River and is a key element within a planned network of improvements designed to make the City easier to navigate for pedestrians and bike riders.

A bridge like no other

The 4.5 meters wide and almost 200m long bridge spans across the Parramatta River between James Ruse Drive and the Gasworks Bridge and is part of the City of Parramatta’s vision for the Central River City which includes a revitalised river and connected, sustainable, innovative communities.

Australia’s first true diagonal bridge, the Alfred Street Bridge shifts in orientation curving from the east at the Alfred Street entry to the west at the Baludarri Drive on the north. The unique diagonal arch gives people the opportunity to enjoy the experience of moving through the arch whether they are on the deck or passing underneath on a ferry.

Connecting communities

The bridge connects neighbourhoods on either side of the Parramatta River and provides more convenient access to services, schools and recreational opportunities including a link to more than 20km of off-road paths along the Parramatta River. It will also provide direct access to the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1 stop on the southern side of the river.

The community will have the opportunity to name the bridge with community consultation planned for 2024.
