Parramatta River Transformation

Completed projects

2023 Charles Street Square

Celebrating the point along the Parramatta River where salt water and fresh water meet, Charles Street Square now offers a distinctive arrival for ferry passengers and makes connections between the river and the CBD accessible to all.

Officially opened in November 2023, the $12m+ transformation sees Parramatta Quay ready to welcome residents and visitors to a new riverfront gathering place that connects people to Parramatta’s unique stories.

For more information see the Charles Street Square page.

2023 Alfred Street Bridge

A spectacular new addition to the City skyline, this elegant pedestrian and cyclist bridge is part of the City of Parramatta’s vision for the Central River City which includes a revitalised river and connected, sustainable, innovative communities.

The $19m Alfred Street Bridge was officially opened in October 2023, and spans across the Parramatta River between James Ruse Drive and the Gasworks Bridge.

The 4.5 meters wide and almost 200m long bridge is Australia’s first true diagonal bridge, it shifts in orientation curving from the east at the Alfred Street entry to the west at the Baludarri Drive on the north. The unique diagonal arch gives people the opportunity to enjoy the experience of moving through the arch whether they are on the deck or passing underneath on a ferry.

For more information see the Alfred Street Bridge page.

2023 Old King’s Foreshore Lighting

The Old King's Foreshore is a culturally-significant stretch of the river foreshore and a high-traffic pedestrian corridor linking key destinations including the Parramatta CBD and CommBank Stadium.

Following extensive community consultation, planning and design, and Heritage NSW approvals, in March 2023 twenty (20) LED light poles were installed along the shared pathway, adjacent to the Old King's Parade Ground.

The area is now brighter and safer for pedestrians and cyclists, and new landscaping brings an understated contemporary style to the Parramatta River foreshore.

For more information see the Old King’s Foreshore Lighting page

2021 Escarpment Boardwalk

Completed in April 2021, the Escarpment Boardwalk is an important missing link in the Parramatta Valley Cycleway.

The riverside pedestrian and cyclist boardwalk connects Parramatta Park to Melrose Park and includes new stairs to Stewart and Macarthur Streets for safe access for locals and school students.

2019 Parramatta Wharf upgrade

Parramatta Wharf was upgraded and reopened on Friday 11 October 2019.

The wharf upgrade was part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program – an initiative to deliver modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure across the state.

The upgrade to Parramatta Wharf will help improve safety, accessibility and comfort for customers and make boarding and disembarking quicker and easier.

2017 Charles Street Square Strategy

The Charles Street Square Strategy advances the vision set out in the Parramatta City River Strategy 2015 with a plan to guide future design and development of Parramatta Quay.

It establishes an aspiration for a distinct public place that connects the Ferry Wharf with the CBD, providing a point of orientation, a site of arrival and departure, spaces for meetings and events, and a place of movement between the City and River that is equitable and legible for all visitors.

The strategy is now being realised via a design and work towards construction.
