PROJECT UPDATE – MAY 2025
Council understands the community's strong desire for a modern, accessible, and fit-for-purpose aquatic and recreation centre in Epping.
That's why we're now urgently exploring various site options and funding sources to deliver a facility that meets the needs of our global City and caters to the community now and in the future – including swimming, learn-to-swim programs, fitness, and more.
The Epping Aquatic Centre has served our community well for 65 years; however the current facility has reached the end of its operational life and would require significant work and funding to safely reopen.
Unfortunately, it's not feasible to deliver the approved development or reopen the pool without substantial additional investment beyond the current project budget.
Council is committed to getting this right for our ratepayers and the Epping community and is excited about delivering a modern aquatic centre for the people of Epping.
Background
To prepare the site for redevelopment, the Epping Aquatic Centre was closed at the end of April 2024, at the end of the summer swimming season. Since that time, the facility has been decommissioned, including turning off and removing plant and equipment, in preparation of the site’s handover to a builder in late 2024.
In March 2024, Council began a Request for Tender process seeking a contractor to deliver the Epping Aquatic Centre Upgrade.
The tender responses contain a significant increase in construction costs that exceed the project budget. As a result, at the 25 November 2024 meeting, Council declined to accept any of the tenders and instead investigated options to revitalise or reopen the facility.
At the 12 May 2025 meeting, Council made the decision to urgently explore various site options and funding sources to deliver an aquatic and recreation centre that meets the needs of our global City and caters to the community.
