    Will the Councillor Professional Development Program be a standardised program or set of offerings for Councillors?

    Holding an induction program for Councillors, including a supplementary component for the Lord Mayor, each Council term is a mandatory requirement under the Regulation. The Lord Mayor and all Councillors are expected to participate in all induction activities.

    It is also mandatory for NSW councils to deliver an ongoing progressional development program for councillors, including the development of individual ongoing professional development plans for the Lord Mayor and each Councillor.

    As part of City of Parramatta’s commitment to supporting the professional development of our Councillors, we are developing a program that includes both mandatory and non-mandatory provisions, delivered across the term of the Council, to support the individual professional development journeys of elected Councillors.

    This will include:
     - Comprehensive Councillor Induction Program following the 2024 Local Government Election;

     - Delivery of an ongoing Professional Development Program, delivered in annual ‘themed’ offerings from mid-September and finishing in the September of the following year. This will include mandatory annual refreshers on core subjects, and opt-in, Council delivered activities;

     - Development of personalised professional development plans, reviewed annually, including both Council-led and external offerings, with elected Councillors enabled to participate in programs, conferences and seminars, supported by the provisions of Council’s Councillor Expenses and Facilities Policy.

    There will not be a one-size-fits-all approach to Professional Development or the implementation of individual plans for elected Councillors.
