Presented across three interconnected spaces, this thought-provoking event invites audiences to reflect on what we inherit, the choices we make, and the communities that support us throughout our lives. Through storytelling, installation, sound, cultural practice and shared gathering, What Holds Us offers a powerful exploration of connection, identity and belonging.

Inspired by Sāmoan cultural perspectives and contemporary lived experience, the experience celebrates the role of family, culture and collective responsibility in shaping our sense of self. While grounded in Sāmoan experiences, audiences from all backgrounds are invited to reflect on the people and values that have guided their own journeys.

What We Inherit

Explore a space inspired by a family home, where everyday objects, stories and written works reflect the cultural knowledge, care and responsibilities passed between generations.

What We Choose

Experience a contemplative installation inspired by traditional tattooing practices, exploring themes of identity, choice and connection to culture.

Where We Belong

Gather on the Western Terrace for a shared cultural experience centred on storytelling, hospitality, live music and meaningful conversation.

A celebration of community and connection

Rather than simply observing, audiences are invited to participate in a living experience that encourages reflection, learning and exchange. As the evening unfolds, the Western Terrace becomes a welcoming space where stories are shared, relationships are formed and community comes together.

The Western Terrace is a series of creative gatherings, performances and workshops taking place underneath the golden hour, as the sun sets, facing West, thinking West. Imagining the Western Terrace as an extension of their own homes, gardens and balconies, the series features artists, authors, filmmakers, musicians and community sharing domestic ritual collectively.
