A Marriage of Heritage and Modernity

Parramatta Town Hall Hosts Its First Wedding

Parramatta Town Hall has hosted its first wedding since reopening its doors, after a 14-month, $30 million-plus meticulous restoration.

The First Couple: Tasman and Ally

Tasman and Ally, the first couple to hold their wedding here, are familiar with the building’s grandeur.

Inspired by Victorian Architecture

“The Victorian free classical-style architecture immediately inspired us in the style we eventually set for our evening reception: ornate, whimsical table decorations, colours keeping with the original restored paintwork, and a voluminous Mikado ballgown and double-breasted tuxedo combination, fit for The Great Hall,” they said.

Modern and Historical Spaces

The modern and historical spaces within Parramatta Town Hall fulfilled the couple’s brief: spaces for families with young children to retire to, a stage for their live band, and a light-filled space for canapés. “Parramatta Town Hall really set the stage for us to host the celebration we were dreaming of,” they added, stating that many elements of their wedding were inspired by the venue.

Love at First Sight

As an architect, Tasman explains that when they first saw Parramatta Town Hall post-restoration, “It was love at first sight.”

The addition of the light-filled Ngurra Gunya Room complemented the contemporary design of the PHIVE building so appropriately, as did the ornate design of historic Parramatta Town Hall.

The couple were drawn to the Charles Byrnes Room that “really made us feel something”, citing the delicate paint work, fireplace, portrait of Charles Byrnes, and daylight flooding through windows making them question whether they were in Parramatta, or a historical building in Europe. They immediately envisioned this as the room to take family portraits, and after seeing their wedding photos, it was confirmed beautifully.

The Great Hall was a room they feel “the designers absolutely got it right”, describing the balance of retaining the old charm of Parramatta Town Hall and adding modern elements like the giant retractable chandeliers, elevated the character of the space through “appropriate, tactful, and sensitive design.”

Creative Freedom

Its historical beauty, timeless elegance, architectural charm, state-of-the-art audio-visual capabilities, support during planning, and freedom to choose their own caterer sealed their choice of venue.

“We are quite creative people, and so we always envisaged designing our own wedding. To be the first at Parramatta Town Hall meant we could have creative freedom.

A Joy-Filled Day

“We took a leap of faith, and it was such a joy-filled and fun day. These moments are priceless and once in a lifetime.”
