Noise, pollution and maintenance

Report pollution

Any pollution complaints, separate from the NSW Environmental Protection Authority licensed premises, stemming from air, noise, odour, waste and water sources from private, businesses and industry premises will be investigated by the City of Parramatta’s Environmental Health Officers.

Backyard burning, BBQs and fire-pits

Backyard burning and unauthorised incineration is NOT permitted at any time in all areas of the City of Parramatta.

You are however permitted to cook or BBQ within your private residential area in an open fire-pit, so long as you only use:

  • dry seasoned wood
  • liquid petroleum gas (LPG)
  • natural gas, or
  • proprietary barbecue fuel (including a small quantity of fire starter)

If you follow the regulations, you can also use domestic wood fired pizza ovens and chimineas in residential areas.

Smoke generated from any of the above activity needs to be minimised to ensure that it is not excessive and does not cause nuisance to neighbours.

Find specific details about the regulation in Schedule 1 of the Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2022.
